Dishen Zhang

Hi, I’m Dishen. It is truly grateful to meet you here.

As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe, genuine, and courageous space where you can reconnect with yourself, explore your story, and discover new possibilities for healing and growth. I offer bilingual counseling in English and Mandarin. My style is warm, collaborative, and strengths-based.

I grew up in Henan, China—a place with scarce resources and fierce academic competition—where I weathered one of my hardest seasons and first discovered the power of therapy. I moved to the U.S. in 2023 and completed my Master’s in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University. These experiences shape how I show up in the room: with curiosity, compassion, a cross-cultural lens, and deep respect for your lived experience.

Before joining It’s Never Too Late, I practiced in diverse settings, including university counseling centers, mental health hotlines, private mental health practices, and comprehensive clinics. I provided individual counseling, psychoeducation, and emotional support to adolescents, adults, couples, and families navigating challenges such as trauma, identity formation, and relational conflict.

Clinically, I take an integrative and relational approach grounded in person-centered and mindfulness-based principles, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I believe meaningful change grows from connection—within yourself and within a trusting therapeutic relationship.

My specialties include anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, attachment and developmental trauma, relationship and family issues, cultural/identity concerns, and life transitions—including support for international students, immigrants, and first-generation clients.

Healing takes time, and it’s never too late to begin. I am honored to walk alongside you on this journey toward self-understanding, compassion, and lasting change.

“The past does not define you and your future is unwritten. Be proud of who you are in the moment.” —Paola Merrill

This quote is meaningful to me because I have had to overcome my fears and learn to be proud of who I am in the moment.  I try to convey that philosophy through my counseling interventions with my clients.  I am in partnership with my clients in using their strengths to build their self-confidence and identifying their weaknesses to work on in their self-improvement plan.

I bring a unique combination of experience and education to be a mentor to others and help them overcome obstacles to lead a fulfilling life, learning to value themselves and practice self-care to enhance self-esteem and be successful advocates for themselves to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams.  I am grateful for people in my life who inspired me to follow my heart and attain educational plateaus to become a positive role model for others. I had to overcome my own fear of change and going back to school late in life to strive for an advanced degree not only as a personal and professional achievement, but also to have a greater impact in making a difference in the lives of others.

The uniqueness of the therapy I provide combines my knowledge of psychotherapy, treatment models of CBT and other treatment modalities along with nutrition and holistic health enhancement such as mindfulness and positive thinking to promote overall well-being with relaxation techniques and natural remedies in advocating for life changing personal practices that will improve overall health as all our parts are intertwined and having sickness in one part affects the whole.

As a native New Yorker I understand how a fast-paced life can affect one's mental health. Meeting the expectations of self and others can cause anxiety, stress, and depression. I know what it means to experience trauma and in that moment not recognize the impact it can have on you later.

I chose this profession because of personal experiences and not having anywhere to turn too. When I finally discovered where to seek help I didn’t find people who looked like me and shared my experiences of the world. My goal as a therapist is to be a safe space for people to discover and explore self. My belief is that inside of us, we have everything we need to be our best selves. Sometimes we just need to be given the tools to bring it out.

I have experience working with adolescents, young adults, and males from diverse backgrounds. The goal is to empower individuals and give them the necessary tools to navigate life's challenges. Through using CBT I will collaborate with individuals and work to address unmet needs or goals they may have. Ultimately, my goal is to assist and encourage anyone I work with to develop skills they can utilize moving forward and onward with their lives.
